HSE warns construction industry – ‘don’t fall for bad practice’

Falls from height continue to be the biggest cause of fatal injury in Britain’s workplaces. In construction, 24 of the 59 deaths in the industry resulted from falling from height. In addition, almost 4,000 major injuries in the construction industry were reported to HSE. Over half of these involved a fall from height or from tripping over materials on site.

Over the next couple of months, HSE Construction Division Inspectors will be carrying out targeted inspections looking at the issues of low falls and good order at construction projects that are approaching completion, particularly in refurbishment projects.

Inspectors will be looking for evidence of effective planning and organisation of the work, making sure that people involved in work at height are competent and that the right equipment is selected and used.

HSE inspectors will also be looking to make sure that sites are properly organised, including management of waste materials, so that walkways etc. are kept clear of unnecessary obstructions that could create a tripping hazard.

Rob Hirst, Principal Inspector for the HSE in Newcastle upon Tyne said:
“Throughout June and July, as part of a targeted campaign of inspections, HSE Construction Inspectors will be making sure that construction companies working in the North East are effectively managing their sites.

“Those involved in procuring and managing construction work should take note that Inspectors will take appropriate enforcement action, when necessary.”
